On April 6th 2009 the earthquake in Abruzzo caused severe damages to the historical centres and as a consequence also caused major disruption to the local delicate social structure.
The risk now is that young generations would leave their places of origin looking for better opportunities of growth and aggregation. For this reason it is vital to give a vigorous response to the decline generated by the existing difficult economic dynamics and made worse by the earthquake.
There is strong awareness that building, economic, social and cultural reconstruction of this area will pass through the young. But the re-birth will be possible only if we are able to guarantee reliable opportunities to the younger generation, by investing on services, innovation, education and social aggregation and most of all by having a real, feasible view of the future. In one word: we must convince the young people to “spend their talents” in the land were they were born and have grown up, thus limiting the temptation to the “exodus”
This is also the objective of SATW (School Around The World) and this is also the reason why I decided together with my colleagues Harry Farthing and James Meikle to give my contribution and commit to the implementation of a project for the youth from Abruzzo.
We would like to build a small football court, possibly with a covering structure, which could become a place of gathering and entertainment for the young people of Villa S.Angelo and the surrounding villages in the province of L’Aquila.
I always believed in teamwork to achieve important targets and the Kilimanjaro climb by a group of individuals sharing the same aspirations seems to me as the right demonstration of collective effort that aims at involving not only those who will attempt the summit but also those who will support this enterprise from home.
